Best Italian in Cardiff

Have been a regular at La Lupa on a weekly basis for three years. Originally it was an intimate place for me and wifey to enjoy a romantic meal. We had our own table (20). We would only go as a couple .... our little secret.
Three years later we have taken more than 50 of our nearest and dearest to this treasure. Most recently, our new friends (x6) from Parentcraft classes and now our new arrivals.
Absolutely great food and service. Should be renamed the "Chilling House". Everything so relaxed!
I've eaten in all the Italian restaurants in Cardiff .... none come close to the La Lupa experience.

My advise is avoid it....

After visiting La Lupa for the first time with about 16 other people for a friends bday, I was fairly frustrated when the so-called manager argued that the birthday girl had not paid the £160 deposit, although he "could remember her bringing the money in and giving her a receipt"???? Seemingly because he had "misplaced" the money, we would all have to pay again!

So not only did this guy embarass and insult somebody on their birthday but he also made sure that not one of the people that night would return.....Well done.

La Lupa Ristorante Pizzeria

La Lupa means 'she wolf' and boy does this 'she wolf' have plenty of bite, or should I say delicious Italian dishes to bite into!

I went there with my family and not only were we served wonderful Italian dishes we were also entertained by the staff. To our amazement we were also able to chat to the visiting Six Nations Italian Under 21 rugby: they were were eating there too. That says something for the place: the cooking is so good that even Italians go there to eat.

Furthermore I was quite happy to pay an extra £1.00 on my bill beacuse Roberto is supporting a charity that cares for disabled and underpriveleged children in South Wales. All the proceeds are going to the charity "Help a South Wales Child."

Well done Roberto and a warm thank you to the staff for a wonderful night.

Dreadful service

I went to La Lupa with a party of 16 people, on the basis of being told that it is the best Italian restaurant in Cardiff. The food was fine, but the service was terrible. Firstly, we had slightly more people turn up than we booked for. Although a simple matter of spilling over onto another table, the manager created an unnecessary drama, made his displeasure well known, and was generally grumpy all evening. We were seated at 7 and orders were taken at 7.15. I do not exaggerate when I say that the food did not arrive until 9.30 - that's right, TWO HOURS later!! Even then, it did not all arrive at once. During our wait, a number of drinks were ordered, many of which did not arrive without further prompting. Neither bread nor water were brought to the table, even though both were requested. When we finished eating, at around 10.30, they took ages to bring the bill, even though half of our party were getting up and leaving.

A number of us had eaten there before, and commented that this was a very atypyical experience. My interpretation was that they are simply unable to cater for larger parties. I definately will not return there, and I would not recommend it to anybody.

OVERCHARGED

had a meal there recently, me and my wife booked a table for two and were sat on a massive table for 8 on our own and looked like a right pair of berks until i asked for us to be moved, when they arranged seating for us we were then forgot about for half an hour before ordering and then we were waiting for our starters for 40 minutes. i got up to leave but they pursuaded us to stay. finished the meal and then had the cheek to try and overcharge us by 20 pounds needless to say we wont be returning

Just as well we all have a sense of humour!

Decided to go to La Lupa as it has been mentioned and reviews looked good. Dinner was for a party of 6.
Got there ok and we were seated promptly. However, that was the only good part of the evening. Service was the worst I have ever encountered.
We sat there for 15 mins before anyone asked us if we wanted drinks, we had a shortage of menus and when we asked for more menus, they didn't appear. An older man came up to ask us if we were ready to order. He didn't wait for us to reply and just walked off. We waited another 10 mins and then asked if we could order to which we were told that we were asked but we had said no??? The older guy walked off in digust and it was another 10 minutes before we could catch another waitress to take our orders.
Drinks arrived and there was DEFINITELY something wrong with the two glasses of house wine we ordered. We asked if we could send these back and we'd go for a bottle of wine instead. The waitress said no one else has a problem with the wine, but it smelled like sherry and I think it was corked. They did however, take back the wine and brought back a bottle.
We eventually ordered and one of our party ordered 2 starters and told them 3 times to bring it with everyone else's mains. A few mins later, they were bringing out her starters, which we had to explain not to bring. We then sat there for 40 mins waiting for our meal, we asked the waitress and she said because we hadn't ordered starters, then we had to wait??? We waited another 20 mins before getting our food. (One of our party had 3 pints before his mains arrived)
Whole we were there, the fire alarm went off 3 times while we were there, no one apologised for the noise of it or tell us if it was safe to stay or not. After the 3rd time, the room started to fill with smoke, again, no one told us anything, so we weren't sure what to do. We all just paid after that and left, we also forgot to check if they charged us for the two glasses of wine. On a good note, the food was very good and there was loads of it. The only thing is, if you've ordered drinks, you're half sozzled by the time it arrives, so it probably doesn't make much difference if the food is good or not, pity, but never again.

love the food

I have to agree with the above comments. I have never had bad food in La Lupa and have been many times. Always great food, but not so much great service. If you are unlucky enough to go when there is a big table, you will prob end up waiting ages for your food!!
