The previous century in British history reached a climax as Britain was the foremost power in the world. As the twentieth century starts Britain has to come to terms with America and Germany usurping the British position. The Eastern Question rears its head again and the British people have to prepare for war, the First World War, and its devastation in all areas of life bringing wholesale change to British society.
