Fright Night and Haunted Basement - Saw

When: Thursday 30th October 2014 - 6pm - 10.30pm

Where: Portland House, 113-116 Bute Street, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, CF10 5EQ

Join Motley Movies and the undead in the Portland House basement this Halloween.

Built in 1927, Portland House marked the future of Cardiff’s docklands. Home of the new National Provincial Bank, the development was seen as a step into the future and a sign of commercial evolution. Three years in the making, the structure would become the highest and grandest that the Docks had ever seen, but amidst the excitement that surrounded its erection, something wasn’t quite right. One night, near the end of the building’s completion, screams were heard by the neighbouring houses and unconfirmed reports claimed that a builder, working the night shift, became trapped inside one of the vaults located deep beneath the bank, never to be seen again. Despite rumours circulating that the new building was haunted the bank denied all the allegations and business continued as usual.

Over the years, the odd unexplained event would occur; paperwork would go missing, vaults would mysteriously open, safe combinations would change and the power would completely cut out, but no one thought much of it, because after all, there’s no such things as ghosts, right?! That was until someone else went missing within the maze of vaults; this time a young clerk. Staff started to refuse to step foot in the basement and many quit amongst an increase in the frequency of paranormal activity, which also saw clients transferring their savings to other branches until finally the bank decided to close its vaults for the last time and few dared to enter the haunted basement ever again.

But all that is set to change as the vaults of the Grade II listed building are being unlocked once again this Halloween.

The Fright Night will commence with entries times from 6pm - 8pm with guests being led down to the building’s haunted vaults where they will be left alone with the various entities that supposedly reside there, before finding their way upstairs where the unique scary experience continues with a viewing of Saw approx 8.30pm.

Once you escape from the basement you’ll be rewarded with a licensed bar so you can enjoy a drink to calm your nerves. We’ll be joined by some of Cardiffs most loved pop-up caterers each night so hot food and cinema snacks and treats will also be available for you to nibble on...

Saw - 2004 (103mins)
Two men wake up at opposite sides of a dirty, disused bathroom, chained by their ankles to pipes. Between them lies a dead man loosely clutching a hand-held tape player and a handgun. Each finds a tape the perfect fit for the player in their back pocket. They play the tapes. One is threatened, the other isn't. But they have a task: One must kill the other by 6:00, or his wife and daughter will die. They find hacksaws in a toilet, and try to cut the chains, but it doesn't work. They are the two newest victims of the Jigsaw Killer. In a flashback, we learn of Amanda, a girl who falls victim to the Jigsaw Killer. On her head is a mask, which is hooked into her lower jaw. There is a timer on it. Only one key will unlock it, and that key is in the digestive tract of her cell mate who lies paralyzed on the opposite side of the room. If she doesn't unlock the mask in time, her lower jaw will be ripped wide open. She survives, but her cell mate doesn't. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn of more victims, and of the nearly-successful capture of the Jigsaw Killer, who doesn't actually kill his victims. Instead, he finds ways to make them kill either themselves, or each other, and he thinks the entire 'game' out perfectly, with no other ways out. Or so it would seem.
