As with a lot of its pubs recently, Brains Brewery has given The Halfway a bit of a makeover. The pub was shut for around a month during late summer 2003 and re-opened its doors with a fresh new look.
The major difference since the refurbishment is that the partition wall between the old lounge and bar areas has come down making the pub look and feel a lot larger.
They have tried to recreate a traditional feeling with the decor using period photographs, ornate looking mirrors and Victorian colours. All of which kind of begs the question why they didn't just leave it as it was?
The Halfway has always had a skittle alley and they've elected to leave that in place towards the back of the pub. There is also a small outdoor courtyard in the centre of the pub which you can use during the summer months.
On the drinks front, being a Brains pub you get the full complement of Brains beers and the usual array of lagers. There was a wine list on each table and the prices looked very reasonable if you like to dabble with the Chardonnays and Sauvignons.
The pub appeared a lot busier than usual on my last visit which leads me to believe that the makeover has done the trick with the local drinking fraternity. Pop along and see what you think...
